Where East Honolulu Divorce Records Are Filed

East Honolulu is part of Honolulu County, so all divorce filings go through the First Circuit Family Court. This court handles every dissolution case on O'ahu, from simple uncontested divorces to complex cases involving property division, custody, and support. The First Circuit is based at the Kapolei Judiciary Complex, which serves as the main filing hub for Family Court matters on the island.

The Kapolei complex is on the west side of O'ahu, which is a drive for East Honolulu residents. That said, you can file by mail and handle many steps online. For in-person visits, the courthouse on Punchbowl Street in downtown Honolulu is also part of the First Circuit and handles some functions. Knowing which location handles what saves you an unnecessary trip.

Every divorce case filed in East Honolulu becomes part of the First Circuit's permanent court record. These records include the original petition, any orders issued during the case, the Final Judgment of Divorce, and any post-decree filings. Under Hawaii Revised Statutes §580-1, the circuit court holds jurisdiction over divorce when at least one party is domiciled in Hawaii. Military members who are stationed here qualify as well.

The Hawaii Judiciary's free public search tool is called eCourt Kokua. It covers divorce cases filed in all circuits across the state. For East Honolulu cases, you select "O'ahu - First Circuit Family Court" from the court dropdown before running your search. The system lets you look up cases by party name or by case ID.

First Circuit Family Court case numbers follow a set format: 1DV followed by the two-digit year, the number 1, and a six-digit sequence number. If you have that number, entering it directly gives you the fastest result. If you're searching by name, enter the last name first. The results show party names, case status, filing date, and docket entries. eCourt Kokua is free to search. If you want to download documents, the fee is $3 per document for files up to 30 pages, and $0.10 for each additional page. For frequent users, subscription plans are available at $125 per quarter or $500 per year.

Note: Not every document in a case file is posted online. Confidential items, sealed exhibits, and older paper-only filings may not appear in eCourt Kokua. If you can't find what you need online, the next step is a public access terminal at a courthouse.

Public Access Terminals Near East Honolulu

If eCourt Kokua doesn't show what you need, public access terminals let you review case files on courthouse computers at no charge. East Honolulu residents have a couple of options. The Hawaii Judiciary's legal documents page lists all terminal locations for the First Circuit and O'ahu courts.

Kaneohe District Court, also known as Abner Paki Hale, is a practical option for many East Honolulu residents. It's closer than the Kapolei complex. The public terminals are in the main entrance lobby on the right side before security. The address is 45-939 Pookela Street, Kaneohe, HI 96744. Phone: (808) 534-6300. Hours run Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM. If you can't find a case on the terminal there, call before making the trip, since not all First Circuit Family Court case files are accessible at every branch location.

Ka'ahumanu Hale at 777 Punchbowl Street in downtown Honolulu is the other main First Circuit location. Phone: (808) 539-4300. This courthouse handles a broader range of First Circuit matters and is worth visiting if the Kaneohe terminals don't have what you need. Both locations are free to use for viewing records. Copies cost extra.

Getting Copies of East Honolulu Divorce Records

There are three ways to get a copy of a divorce record: in person, by mail, or online through eCourt Kokua. Which method works best depends on what you need and how fast you need it.

In person at Kapolei or Ka'ahumanu Hale is the fastest option. Staff can pull the case and make copies while you wait in most cases. If you don't have the case number, a name search costs $5. Plain copies are $1 per page. A certified copy costs $2 plus $1 per page. Certified copies are what most agencies and foreign governments require for legal purposes. Bring a photo ID and the full names of both parties if you don't have the case number.

Mail requests go to First Circuit Court – Family Division, 777 Punchbowl Street, Honolulu, HI 96813. Include the names of both parties, approximate filing year, and case number if known. Allow at least 10 business days for processing. Include a check or money order made out to the State of Hawaii. You can also find the court records request process on the court records request page for O'ahu.

For digital documents, eCourt Kokua lets you download available case documents at $3 per file. This works well for straightforward document needs, though it won't include sealed items or older paper-only records.

Hawaii DOH Divorce Certificates

The Hawaii Department of Health issued divorce certificates as a separate vital record from July 1951 through December 2002. The Hawaii DOH Vital Records office stopped issuing these certificates on February 1, 2026.

For divorces that happened outside that July 1951 to December 2002 window, or if you need official court documentation, you need to go to the First Circuit Family Court, not the DOH. The court-issued Final Judgment of Divorce is the primary legal record for all purposes. Fees for DOH records when they were available were $10 for the first copy and $4 for each additional copy, with a $2.50 administrative fee per application. For current requests, the eHawaii vital records portal and the DOH office at 1250 Punchbowl Street, Room 103, can advise on what's still available. In-person service runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 7:45 AM to 2:30 PM.

Filing for Divorce in East Honolulu

East Honolulu residents file for divorce in the First Circuit Family Court. The filing fee is $215 for cases without minor children and $265 for cases that involve children. The extra $50 is a Kids First surcharge that applies when kids are part of the case.

Before you can file in the First Circuit, you need to meet the residency requirement. Under HRS §580-1, Hawaii requires that one spouse be domiciled in the state. For filing in the First Circuit, you need to have lived on O'ahu for at least three months and in Hawaii for at least six months. Military personnel stationed in Hawaii count as meeting the domicile requirement.

Hawaii is a no-fault divorce state. Under HRS §580-41, the only required ground is that the marriage is "irretrievably broken." You don't have to show fault or prove wrongdoing. When you file, an Automatic Temporary Restraining Order (ATRO) kicks in under HRS §580-10.5. That order bars both parties from transferring assets, changing insurance beneficiaries, or removing children from the island while the case is pending.

Property division follows Hawaii's "economic partnership" model under HRS §580-47, which uses 13 statutory factors to reach an equitable split. Equitable does not always mean equal; it means the court weighs the specific facts of the marriage. If children are part of the case, both parents must complete a Kids First Hawaii course. Sessions run on alternating Wednesdays at both the Kapolei and Honolulu locations, from 5 to 6:30 PM. Call Kids First Hawaii at (808) 954-8280 to register.

Self-help forms for divorce are available on the Hawaii courts self-help page. The First Circuit also has a dedicated O'ahu family court forms page with the specific packets used in this circuit.

Historical Divorce Records for East Honolulu

For older divorce cases, the Hawaii State Archives holds First Circuit court records going back to 1848. Records through 1892 are available in the genealogy collection under the MFL 51 series. These are not accessible through eCourt Kokua and require a direct visit or inquiry to the archives.

The Hawaii State Archives is at 364 S. King Street in Honolulu. Phone: (808) 586-0329. Their genealogy research guide for divorce case files explains how these older records are organized and what the collection contains. This is the main resource for East Honolulu residents doing family history research or looking for divorces that predate the modern court system.

Note: For genealogy and research purposes, the UH Manoa Library also maintains a Hawaii courts research guide that covers archives, historical records, and how to navigate the state court system.
